It is with great admiration that I write this letter to inform you of Dr. Maxine Davis. I am Chereeta Wilson, currently the co-founder of R.E.P. (Research Education Program)- an outreach program for youth ages 12-16 years old offered through our Grand Prairie Storm Athletics program. R.E.P. allows a unique hands-on experience for youth looking to gain Research Education Project- Based Learning.
Upon meeting Dr. Davis at a conference held at U.T.A., I knew that something was undoubtedly special about her. As our program comes to a pause for the summer, I am confident that she is a special person. Dr. Maxine Davis traveled to Grand Prairie, TX every Monday from 6pm-8pm for 12 weeks to facilitate R.E.P. Students through the research process. With Dr. Davis assistance, the R.E.P. interns explored the relationship between Intimate Partner Violence and hip hop/rap. Through this journey, R.E.P. students learned about qualitative research, forms of Intimate Partner Violence, and how to code qualitative data. R.E.P. students were then able to generate their research question (How hip hop/rap sheds light on Intimate Partner Violence?). In each session, Dr. Davis provided her expertise to R.E.P. Students as they analyzed hip hop/rap songs with some form of Intimate Partner Violence. Students were able to use inclusion/exclusion criteria to select songs that condemned IPV. In the final sessions, Dr. Davis prepared the R.E.P. Interns to showcase their findings at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Davis was consistently kind, supportive, and dedicated to our R.E.P. Students. She always made herself available for questions and guidance for myself and the students. I would not have been able to complete this project without her forward-thinking, concise planning, and in-depth knowledge of IPV.
Words can not express how incredibly pleased I am to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Davis. The University of Texas- Arlington Social Work Department is immensely blessed to have Dr. Davis on their team! I am not sure of the recognition she may be able to receive for all her hard work and faithfulness to the R.E.P. Students, but- words can not express how much our organization and students thank you for bringing on board such an amazing professor!
